This substance perfectly resembles gumarabic.

It flows from the Mimosa Senegalensis,Linn., a tree of Senegal (Polygamia Mo-nœcia, Linn.; Leguminosa, Juss. ; Fig.Blackw. Herb. t. 345 J .

This is either in long, thin, contorted,worm-like pieces, or in straps, rolled andfolded upon themselves. It is of a greyish-white colour, opaque, somewhat ductile,inodorous, and of a vapid and mucoustaste.

It flows from several species of Astra-galus, such as the A. vents, Oliv., A. gum-miferus, Lab., and A. Creticus, Linn., allindigenous in the East.

It is composed, according to Guibourt,of a substance, soluble in w r ater, but totallydifferent from gum arabic, and of anotherwhich is insoluble.

It is seldom employed except to afford amucilage to hold in suspension powders inwater, and to give consistence to variouspreparations.

Mucilago Astragali Tragacanthse.

(Edinb.)R. Powdered Tragacanth,

two drams.Boiling Water, eight ounces.Having macerated for twenty-fourhours, triturate till the gum is en-tirely dissolved, and strain throughlinen.

Mucilago Gummi Tragacanthse.(Dubl.)

R. Powdered Tragacanth,

two drams.

Water, eight fluid ounces.

Macerate in a covered vessel till

the gum is dissolved, and strain

through linen.

R. Tragacanth, one part.

Cold Water, eight parts.

Digest for twelve hours, triturate, andstrain. (Fuld. ; Lusit.)

Lipp. prescribes twelve parts of water. —Coxe — twenty. — Ant. — thirty-six. — Ba-var. ; and Sax. — sixty. — Swediaur ; andVan Mons — sixty-two. — Austr. — twohundred and forty, and Sard. — a sufficientquantity.

R. Tragacanth, one part.

Boiling Water, fourteen parts.

Triturate together. (Batav. ; Belg.)

Amst. prescribes sixteen parts of water.— Brugnatelli — a sufficient quantity.
