ERVUM LENS.—LENTIL.

This plant is cultivated in Europe. (Dia-delphia Decandria, Linn. ; Leguminosa!,Juss. ; Fig. (Ed. Fl. Dan. t. 95.)

The seed (Semen Lentis) is employed. Itis orbicular, flattened, bulging on bothsides, and of a yellowish colour.

The decoction of it was formerly pre-scribed in variola. This decoction, whenweak, is slightly astringent.

Alcohol, four parts.

Cut the meat into small pieces, and ex-pose it for twelve hours to a current of dryair, then digest it with the alcohol in awarm place ; at the expiration of an hour,let the vessel become cold, and filter theliquor. Distil off the alcohol, strain theresidue through flannel, and evaporate itto the consistence of an extract. (VanMons)

Chop them very finely, add cold water totbe mass, and knead it well ; then strainthrough a linen cloth ; and heat the liquor,skim it when it boils : lastly filter, and eva-porate it to the consistence of extract. (Ca-det de Gassicourt)

It is stimulant, and possesses an agree-able taste. It is good to recall the appetiteof convalescents.

This plant is originally from Persia. (Dia-delphia Decandria, Linn. ; Leguminosa!,Juss.)

The stems, flowers, and seeds are em-ployed.

The stems (Stirpites Fabarum) are qua-drangular, simple, and furnished withwinged leaves composed of from four to sixoval, oblong, glabrous leaflets.

The flowers are white, spotted with black.

The seed is oblong, flattish, and uin-bilicated at the larger extremity. Under athick pellicle it contains a green and bitterkernel.

The fruit, Beech-nut [Nux Fagi ; Faîne,Fr.), is employed. It consists of two tri-angular nuts enclosed in a spiny involucrmn,and containing each, a white, oleaginouskernel, of an agreeable taste.
