This gum-resin is in small irregularly-shaped friable masses, round, oval, unevenon the surface, sometimes branched and ca-vernous ; of a pale-yellow externally, whitishand shining internally, and inodorous.
It results from the exsiccation of themilky juice which flows from incisions madein the stems or branches of the EuphorbiaOfficinarurn, Linn. {Fig. Flore Med. II. 60),of the E. Canarieiisis {Fig. Blackw. Herb. I.340. f. 1), and of the E. Antiquorum {Fig.Black. Herb. t. 339), shrubs {DodecandriaTrigynia, Linn. ; Euphorbiaceœ, Juss.)which grow, the first in the desarts ofAfrica, the second in the Canaries, and thelast at Malabar or in Barbary.
It contains, according to Pelletier,resin, wax, and various malates. Bracon-not has given a somewhat different analysisof it.
It is one of the most violent irritants, andis now rarely employed except externally.

Root of White Hellebore, four scruples.
Make a powder.

Boil to the consumption of the humidity,and strain. (Wirtem.)

Digest without heat for several days, andfilter. (Van Mons)
Sard, prescribes six ounces of euphor-bium, and two pounds of olive oil. — Hisp.— one ounce of euphorbium, and twelveounces of oil.
It is recommended in paralysis and atro-phy of the limbs.

Tinctura Euphorbii. (Austr. ; Gall. ;Fuld. ; Hann. ; Hass. ; Lipp. ; Borus. ;Sax. ; Niemann ; Piderit)
R. Euphorbium, in coarse powder,
one part.Alcohol (22 degrees), four parts.
Digest for three days, and strain. (Gall.)Austr. prescribes two ounces of euphor-bium, and one pound of alcohol (0.850).—Hann. ; Hass. ; Borus. ; Sax. ; and Pi-derit — one ounce of euphorbium, and onepound of rectified spirit. — Fuld. — one partof euphorbium, and eight parts of alcohol. —■Lipp. — one of euphorbium, and sixteen ofalcohol.
It is applied externally in caries, to chro-nic and sordid ulcers, to scrofulous en-gorgements, and to paralytic parts.
The greatest circumspection is required inemploying it.
PLASTER OF EUPHORBIUM.
Emplastrum ischiadicum seu rubefaciens seude Euphorbio.
R. Resin, four ounces.
Turpentine, six drams.
Melt together, and add
Euphorbium, in powder,
one diam anda half.Mix. (Dan. ; Herbip. ; Saunders ;Spielmann)
Van Mons prescribes four ounces ofresin, three ounces of turpentine, and sixdrams of euphorbium. — Swediaur — oneounce of resin, a sufficient quantity of tur-pentine, and fifteen grains of euphorbium. —Lipp. ; and Niemann — eight parts of resin,four of turpentine, and three of euphorbium.
