Muriate of Soda, J two ounees -

Pitch, three ounces.

Turpentine, one ounce.

Yellow Wax, three ounces.

Melt together the three last, and addslowly the other ingredients pulverized to-gether.

It is resolvent and rubefacient ; it receivedthe name of Capucins' plaster on account oftheir using it to remove callosities of theknees, sufficiently common among them.

Spielmann gives a formula for a verysimilar preparation which he calls Emplas-irum ad Fungos Articulorum : — three ouncesof pitch, one ounce each, of wax and of tur-pentine, two ounces each, of pyrethrum, ofdecrepitated muriate of soda, andofeuphor-bium, and one ounce each, of gum ammo-niac, of galbanum, of mastic, and of oli-banum.

four pounds.White Wax, one pound.

Lard, four pounds.

Melt, and add

Powdered Pyrethrum,

Hisp.This is in hard,brittle pieces, ofareddish-

brown or blackish colour, semi-transpa-

rent, and of a bright fracture. It has anagreeable, feeble odour, but developed byheat, and an aromatic, acrid, resinous, andrather styptic taste.

It is produced by the Hederá Helix,Linn. ; but only in the East.

There are two sorts of this gum-resin :

1. Ladanum in massis : in soft glutinantmasses, of a blackish-red or black colour.

2. Ladanum in tortis ; in flattened, spi-rally-twisted cylinders, dry, hard, brittle,and of a blackish-grey colour.

Its odour is pleasant, and its taste feeble,but balsamic and bitterish.

It exudes spontaneously from the leavesand branches of the Cistus Creticus, Linn.,
