GUMMI CERASI.-CHERRY GUM.

It is in large, agglutinated, transparent,red pieces, imperfectly soluble in water.

It exudes from the trunk and branches ofplum, cherry, apricot, and almond trees.

It is composed of two substances, one so-luble and the other not soluble in water,combined in various proportions.

A solid gum-resin, of a yellowish-whiteor brownish-yellow colour, dull externally,vitreous and transparent internally, ex-tremely hard, and requiring heat for the de-velopement of its taste and smell.

It is attributed to the Elœocarpus Copalli-fera, Retz, a tree of Ceylon ; but Gui-bourt is of opinion that it is produced bya vegetable allied to the Hymenœa.

The Rhus Copallinus, Linn., yields ananalogous resin.

It is stimulant, and is sometimes employ-ed in fumigations.

This substance is íi. thick coriaceouspieces, solid, very elastic, of a white, brown,or red colour, inodorous, and insipid.

It differs from the resins, properly socalled, inasmuch as azote enters into itscomposition. It exists in a great numberof vegetables and vegetable productions,but it is furnished principally by the coagu-lation of the juice of the Sip'honia Cahuchu,Schreb., a tree of Brazil and Guiana.
