GALLIUM.—LADIES' BEDSTRAW.

1. Gallium mollugo, Linn. — Great Ladies'Bedstraw.

S ynonimes :— Caille-lait Wane, Fr. ; Weis-ses Labkraut, Germ. ; Zagtblaadig wal-strov, Dut. ; Mollugem, Port.

Gall. ; Murray and Gmelin.

A common plant of Europe. (TetrandriaMonogynia, Linn. ; Bubiaceœ, Juss. ; Fig.Blackw. Herb. t. 168.)

The flowering herb {Herba et Flores Galliialbi) is employed. It presents a tetragonal,smooth, feeble, branching stem, furnishedwith oblong, slightly dentated, mucronatedleaves, eight in a whirl ; having whiteflowers, forming branching panicles at in-tervals. Its odour is weak, but agreeable,and its taste acidulous.

The juice of the flowers was formerlyprescribed in epilepsy.

2. Gallium verum, Linn. — Yellow Ladies'Bedstraw.

The flowering herb ( Herta et Flores Gal-lii lutei) is employed. It presents a slen-der, branching, short stem, furnished with

linear, glabrous leaves, six or eight in awhirl, and with small yellow flowers, dis-posed in bunches on the upper part, wherethey form together an elongated narrowpanicle. Its smell is agreeable, and its tasteacrid and styptic.It is slightly astringent.

as the precursory symptoms of the fit are
