This gum-resin is met with in a cylin-drical form, of a yellowish-brown colourexternally, and of a deeper hue internally,opaque, heavy, brittle, and exhibiting ashining fracture. It is inodorous, and itstaste is acrid and bitter. Its powder is ofa fine yellow colour.
It is the inspissated milky juice whichflows from incisions made in the trunk ofthe Stalagmitis cambogioïdes, Mur., a treeof Ceylon and of the East Indies (Polyan-dria Manogynia, Linn. ; Guttiferœ, Juss.),and not, as has been erroneously stated bysome, of the Garcinia cambogia, Pers. ;{Fig. Flor. Medic. IV. 192), which, how-ever, furnishes an analogous product. Itwould appear, nevertheless, that the gam-boge of the Stalagmitis (Gummi Guttœ Sia-mense seu verum seu cambogium) is veryrare, and that of the Garcinia (GummiGuttœ Zeylanicum seu spurium) is onlymet with in commerce. There is also to bedistinguished a spurious gamboge (Gummiguttœ Americanum) which is obtained fromthe Hypericum baccifcrum and the H. Cayen-ense, shrubs, the former of Mexico and thelatter of Cayenne.
Gamboge is a very powerful drastic pur-gative, anthelmintic, and contra-stimulant.
Dose, from two to six grains, of thepowder.
