A shrub of the East Indies, but cultivatedin the south of Europe. (Pentandria Di-gynia, Linn. ; Rhamneœ, Juss. ; Fig. Nouv.Duh. III. t. 16.)

The fruit, called Jvjubes ; Jujubm senBaccœ Jvjubce seu Zizyphi, is employed.

It consists of drupes of the size and formof an olive of a reddish-brown colour, con-taining under a thick pellicle, a soft yellow-coloured, mucilaginous flesh, of a sweetand mucilaginous taste, and covering anoblong, hard, grooved stone.

Ainslie says that the Indians prescribethe decoction of the root in certain fevers,but he thinks it does not possess muchactivity.

R. Jujubes, any quantity.

Water, a sufficient quantity.

Boil till the fruit is softened ; then passthe pulp through ahair sieve, mix the waterof the decoction with, and evaporate thewhole slowly to the proper consistence.

Boil the fruit in ten pounds of the water,strain the decoction, and dissolve the gumin the remainder of the water ; mix the twostrained liquors, add the sugar, and add thewhites of five eggs beaten with water, andboil, skimming, till the liquor is reducedto one third ; then having strained it througha linen cloth, and evaporated it to the con-sistence of thick syrup, add the tincture,and continue the evaporation, in a water-bath, till the whole has acquired the con-sistence of a soft extract ; finally pour itinto oiled iron-moulds and dry in a stove.(Gall.)

Bavar. ; and Niemann direct one parteach, of jujubes, and of corinth raisins, tobe boiled in thirty-six parts of water tillreduced to twenty-four, twice its weight ofof sugar to be added to the strained decoc-tion, and then one half part of white of eggbeaten with a little water ; the mixturethen having been evaporated to the consis-tence of syrup, twenty-four parts of muci-lage of gum arabic to be added, and thewhole evaporated to the proper consistence ;then to be poured into moulds, and driedat a gentle heat.
