OCYMUM.—BASIL.

Two species of this genus of plants arespoken of in pharmacopoeias :

1. Ocymum basilicum, Linn. — Sweet Basil.

The herb, flowers, and" seeds are em-ployed.

The herb {Herba Basilici majoris seu ci-trati seu Ocymi vulgatioris seu medii seumagni) consists of a slightly hairy stem,and of petiolated, oval, lanceolated leaves,somewhat ciliated on the borders, and

sparsely notched. It has a very agreeableodour and an aromatic taste.

The flowers are white, and are disposedin whirls.

The seeds are small, oblong, and black.They have an aromatic odour, but no taste.

It is stimulant. — Dose, two drams and ahalf, infused in two pounds of boiling water.

2. Ocymum minimum, Linn.

Synonime ;— Basilic à petites feuilles, Fr.Bavar.

The herb {Herba Basilici minimi) is em-ployed. It consists of a branching stem,and of numerous acute, obtuse, or roundleaves, rather thick, green or reddish, of astrong and agreeable odour, and of a veryaromatic taste.

Flowering Herb of Sweet Basil,

five parts.Water, seven parts.

Distil, and separate the oil.

The distilled water is now frequently em-ployed, in the dose of one or two ounces.

ŒSYPUS.— YELK OF WOOL.

Synonimes : — Suint, Fr. ; Hisopo hú-medo, Span.

An oleagino-extractive substance of afetid odour, with which the wool of sheepis impregnated.

It contains, according to Vauciuelin, afat animal matter and carbonate of lime,

with a little acetate and hydro-chlorate ofpotass.

It enters into several plasters. — Hisp. di-rects it to be purified by boiling it in waterin sufficient quantity to obtain a thick liquid,which is to be strained through a silk-sieve,and then evaporated to the consistence ofsoft extract.
