GALEGA.— GOAT'S RUE.
Two species of this genus of plants arementioned in pharmacopoeias.
1. Galega officinalis, Linn.
Synonimes :— Galega officinal, Faux In-digo, Rue de chèvre, Fr. ; GeissrauteGeissraute fasanenkraut, Germ.

The herb (Herba Galegœ seu Eutœ Capra-
ria:) is employed ; it consists of a branchingstem, and of leaves composed of from fif-teen to seventeen oval leaflets.
It is inodorous ; and its taste is mucila-ginous and bitterish.
It is said to be alexipharmic and sudorific.
2. Galega Virginiana, Linn.Coxe.
A plant of the United States.Pluk. Aim. t. 23. f. 2.)
The root is reputed anthelmintic.

This plant is common throughout Eu-rope. (Tetrandria Monogynia, Linn. ;Rubiaceœ, Juss. ; Fig. (Ed. Fl. dan. t. 464.)
The herb (Herba Aparines) is employed.
It presents a slender, quadrangular stem,furnished with hooked asperities on the an-gles, and bearing linear leaves, rough ontheir borders, verticillated, six or eight ina whirl.
It formerly passed for resolvent and al-
terative, and was prescribed in cutaneousdisorders.
2. Galium cruciatum. — Sm. — Gross-wort.
Synonimes : — Croissette velue, Fr. ;Kreutzkraut, Germ.
Ferr. ; Wirtem. ; Spielmann.
A common plant of Europe. (PolyandriaDiœcia, Linn. ; Rubiaceœ, Juss. ; Fig.Blackw. Herb. t. 76.)
The root and herb are employed.
The root (Radix Cruciatœ seu Genlianœcruciatee seu minoris) is fibrous, and of asaffron-yellow colour.
The herb is composed of a thin, square,hairy stem, having opposite branches, fur-nished at each articulation with four sessile,oval, trinerved, hairy leaves. It is destituteof odour, but has a bitter taste.
It is tonic, and stomachic.
