A gum resin in clear brown, semitrans-parent pieces of the size of a filbert, show-ing many white grains in their fracture ;this kind is called Galbanum in tears, Gal-hanum in lacrymis seu in granis ; or, ineakes of a more or less deep-brown colour,containing also white grains ; this is calledGalbanum in massis. Galbanum is friablewhen cold, and tenacious when warm ; itsconsistence somewhat resembles that ofwax. Its odour is strong and disagreeable ;and its taste distinct, warm, and bitterish.

It has been successively analysed by Neu-mann, Fiddichow, Meissner and Pel-letier. According to the latter chemist itcontains in one hundred parts, 66.86 ofresin, 19.28 of gum, 6.34 of oil, 7.52 ofwood and impurities, and traces of a cal-careous malate. According to Meissner,in five hundred parts, it contains 329 ofresin, 113 of gum, 9 of tragacanthine, 1 ofextractive, with malic acid, 17 of oil, 10 ofwater, and 14 of impurities.

It is the inspissated milky juice whichflows from transverse incisions made in thestem of the Bubon Galbanum, Linn. ; aplant of Africa. (Pentandria Digynia,Linn. ; Umbellifera?, Juss.; Fig. Flore Me-dic. IV. 175.)

Galbanum may be purified either by re-ducing it, in cold weather, to powder, andsifting it, (Hann. ; Olden. ; Lusit. ;Borus.; Sax.; and Swediaur) ; or, bydissolving it in vinegar (Bruns.; Hisp.),white wine or water (Hisp.), and evapora-ting the solution ; or, by softening it in al-cohol, straining it through a linen cloth,and drying it slowly. Galbanum is stimulant, but this propertyhas not prevented it from being classedamong the anti-spasmodics, probably on ac-count of its disagreeable odour. Its stimu-lant action, as Murray has remarked, ismore energetic than that of gum ammo-niacum.
