CALCIUM.
It is the operculum of several shells ofthe genus Turbo, which are found on theshores of the Adriatic sea. It was formerlyesteemed aphrodisiac.

A foliaceous lamina produced by the whitecalcareous matter with which the ediblesnail [Helix pomatia) closes its shell in thewinter, and which solidifies in the air.

This is of an oval figure, lamellated,white, swelled out on both its surfaces, ter-minating behind by a slightly bent portion,with a median summit. It is found in theback of the Sepia officinalis, Linn., acepha-lopodous molusca. {Fig. Enc. méth. pi. 6.f. 5. 6. 7.)
It is composed, according to Dr. John, iof carbonate of lime, with a little phosphate, iand animal matter.

These bodies are very variable in form |and size ; they are composed of numerousstrata combined with each other by themother of pearl substance which lines theinterior of the shell of the pearl muscle,Avicula magaritifera, Brug.

This is the basilary bone of the carp. Itis triangular, and has the colour and con-sistence of horn.
15. Lapides Spongiorum. — Sponge Stones.

These bodies are of a whitish grey colour,and friable. They are found in the interior
of the common sponges, and seem to befragments of various corallines.

These are the extremities of the claws ofthe common crab [Cancer Pagurus, Linn.) ,a crustaceous maxillary decapode. [Bra-chyu rce arquas. Latr. ; Fig. Herbst. Cane.tab. 9. f. 59.) It is common in the seas ofEurope. It has united pincers, with blacktipped claws.
