BALSAMUM PERUVIANUM.—PERUVIAN BALSAM.

1. Balmmum Peruvianum seu Indicum al-
bum. — White or Soft Peruvian Balsam.This is liquid, transparent, and of a paleyellow colour, after a time, becoming brownand clammy. When this is slowly dried itbecomes brittle, and of a reddish or yellow-ish colour. It is then called Balsamnrn Pe-ruvianum seu Indicum siccum, Opobalsamumsiccum. — Dry Peruvian Balsam.
2. Bahamum Peruvianum seu Indicum ni-
grum. — Black Peruvian Balsam.
This has the consistence and colour ofsyrup which has been a little burnt. It hasa strong and agreeable smell, and an acridand bitter taste.
This balsam is derived from the Myroœy-lum perniferum, Linn., a small tree of SouthAmerica and of Mexico. {Decandria mo-noggnia, Linn.; Leguminosa, Juss. ; Fig.Horn. Max. p. 51.)
It is composed of a resin, and of benzoicacid.
It is stimulant, and is more frequentlyemployed externally than internally.
TINCTURE OE PERUVIAN BALSAM.
Tinctura seu Essentia Balsami Peruviani,Alcohol cum Balsamo Peruviano, Lini-mentum Balsami Peruviani seu anli-ar-thrilicum. (Ant. ; Bruns. ; Ferr. ;Hann.; Lusit.; Palat. ; Sax.; Wir-tem. ; Augustin ; Brugnatelli; Nie-mann ; Swediaur)R. Peruvian Balsam, one part.
Alcohol (30 degrees) , six parts.
Digest for four days, in a moderate heat ;then set aside and niter.
Hann. ; and Swediaur prescribe oneounce and a half of balsam and one poundof concentrated alcohol. — LueiT. ; and Au-gustin — one part of balsam and threeparts of alcohol. — Sax. — one of balsam andfive of alcohol.' — Bruns.; Palat.; andWirtem. — one of balsam and six of alco-hol. — Brugnatelli — one of balsam andtwo of alcohol. — Ferr. — one of balsam andeight of alcohol.
It is prescribed as stimulant, astringent,balsamic, stomachic, and alterative. — Dose,from thirty to fifty drops, according to thestrength r'f the preparation.
It was formerly employed externally as adetergent application to fetid and gangre-nous ulcers.

R. Assafcetida, two drams.
Benzoic Acid,
Opium,
Camphor,
Saffron,
Squill,
Oil of Anise,
Peruvian Balsam,
Concentrated Alcohol,
two pounds and a half.Digest and filter.
STOMACHIC ELIXIR. (BoRIEs)
of each,two scruples.
half an ounce.
R. Theriac,
Peruvian Balsam,
two drams,one dram.
Tincture of Castor, \ of each,Spirit of Angelica, J half an ounce.Compound Tincture of Aloes,
two ounces.Digest, and filter.
It is stimulant, cordial, anti-spasmodic,and anodyne.
Dose, twenty drops, in wine, four timesa day.

R. Peruvian Balsam, three ounces.
Dried Subcarbonate of Potass,
one ounce.Triturate together, add
Concentrated Alcohol, fifteen ounces.Digest slowly for three days, and distilslowly in a water-bath. (Wirtem.)
Spielmann prescribes two ounces ofbalsam, one ounce of subcarbonate, andtwelve ounces of spirit of roses.
It is stimulant, sudorific, and diuretic.

R. Syrup of Roses, twelve ounces.
Spirit of Peruvian Balsam,
three drams.Mix.
Hoffmann recommended this in pulmo-nary consumption.
R. Peruvian Balsam, one ounce.
Boiling Water, one pound.
Infuse in a covered vessel. Decant when
cold, and dissolve in ten ounces of the liquor.
White Sugar, one pound and a half.
