This is in soft, glutinous masses of a

deep green colour and strong unguentaceous

smell. It solidifies slowly when exposed tothe air.

This resin runs from incisions made inthe trunk and branches of the CalophyllumCalaba, ¿ACQ.. ; a tree of the Antillas. [Poli-andria Monogynia, Linn. ; Gultifenp,Juss. ; Fig. Jacq. Amer. t. 165.)

It is stimulant and resolvent.

When liquid, this balsam is of a citrine-white colour and transparent ; but after atime, when it has solidi.'ied, it is of a goldenyellow hue. It has an agreeable odour re-sembling that of lemons. Its taste is bit-terish and rather astringent.

It is obtained, either by making incisionsin the trunk and branches, or by boiling thelesser branches and the leaves, of the AmyrisGileadensis {Fig. Vahl. Symb. I. p. 28, 1. 11.)and of the Amyris Opobalsamum, Linn., ashrub of Egypt and of Arabia. [OctandriaMonogynia, Linn.; Terebinlhaceœ, Juss.;Fig. Enc. meth. pi. 303, f. 2.)

its medicinal properties are the same asthose of turpentine.

Balsam of Mecca, one part.

Alcohol (26 degrees) , four parts.

Digest for six days, occasionally shakingthe vessel ; then set aside, and strain.

Alcohol, eight pounds.

Dissolve the balsam in one third of thealcohol, and digest the other ingredients inthe remaining part for four days. Filter thetinctures, mix them together, add one partof the mixture to two parts of lime water,and make a cataplasm with linseed meal.

It is recommended in gout and rheu-matism.
