Put it into a luted stoneware retort com-municating with a large tubulated receiver.Distil with a gradually augmented heat tillnothing more passes over, and separate theoil by means of a funnel.

This oil is only employed after it hasbeen rectified. There are several processesfor that purpose.

Oleum Succini purissimum. (Edinb.)

Distil oil of amber, mixed withsix times its quantity of water, froma glass retort, till two thirds of thewater have passed over into the re-ceiver; then separate the purifiedvolatile oil from the water, and keepit in well-stopped phials.

Oleum Succini Rectificatum. (Dubl.)

R. The Oil which comes over inthe preparation of succinicacid, one pound.

Water* six pints.

Distil till two-thirds of the waterhave passed over into the receiver;then separate the oil.

R. Empyreumatic Oil of Amber,

any quantity.

Fill a retort with it to one half, and dis-til, by slight ebullition, till the oil begins topass over more coloured. (Bavar. ; Pol. ;Brugnatelli ; Henri ; Van Mons)

one ounce,sixteen drops.

Distil slowly four ounces ; then changethe receiver, and distil five ounces more :re-distil this with water, and draw off threeounces more. Mix this second productwith the first, and re-distil the whole withwater. (Amst.)

Hisp. requires the distillation of the oilwith twelve parts of water, till it becomesperfectly limpid.

It is stimulant, anti-spasmodic, nervine,resolvent, diaphoretic, diuretic, and emme-nagogue. — Dose, from five to fifteen drops.—It is not much used.

Oleosaccharum Succini. (Palat. ; Wir-tem.)

R. White Sugar,Oil of Amber,Triturate together.

BALSAM OF AMBER.

Balsamum Succini. (Wirtem.)

R. Oil of Amber, one dram.

—----- Nutmeg, two drams and a half.

Mix. — It is employed externally, in hys-teria and cephalalgia.

ARTIFICIAL MUSK.

Moschus artificialis, Resina Succini balsa-mica, Oleum Succini oxydaium, Succinumoxygenatum. (Amer.; Lipp. ; Olden.;Suec. ; Brugnatelli ; Coxe ; Nie-mann ; Van Mons)

R. Oil of Amber, two parts,

nitric Acid, six parts.

Digest for twenty-four hours, and washthe product with cold water. (Lipp. ;Niemann)

Amer. ; and Coxe prescribe one part ofoil and two parts of acid. — Olden. — two ofoil and five of acid. — Van Mons — one ofoil and three of acid. — Suec ; and Brug-natelli — one of oil and four of acid.

It is stimulant, and is recommended as .isubstitute for the true musk.

TINCTURE OF ARTIFICIAL MUSK.
