gose, tuberculous bark. It is destitute ofodour, and is exceedingly bitter when old.Pelletier and Caventou have foundstrychnine in it.

This wood is a reputed specific againstthe bites of venomous animals. It shouldbe employed with circumspection. — Boer-haave extolled it in intermittent fevers.

There are two sorts of this kind of storax.

1. Copalm Liquid Storax, Balsam or Oilof Copalm, Louisiana Copalm ; of the con-sistence of honey, transparent, of a reddish-yellow colour becoming of a deep red orblackish with time, of a very agreeableodour, and of an acid and aromatic taste.It solidifies into a blackish-brown, brittleresin.

2. Common Liquid Storax ; of the consis-tence of thick ointment, of a reddish,greyish, or brownish colour, scarcely trans-lucent, of a strong and agreeable odour andof an acrid and bitter taste.

This balsam flows from the Liquidambarslyraciflua, a tree of Mexico. {MonœciaPolyandria, Linn. ; Amentácea;, Juss. ;Fig. Fiore Medic. VI. 331)

Bonastre has discovered in it a peculiarresinous and crystallizable matter, whichhe calls Styacine.

It is stimulant, and is reserved almostexclusively for external use.

Strain through a linen cloth. (Gall.;

Genev.; Sard.; and Spielmann pre-scribe one pound of walnut oil, half a poundof storax, one pound of resin, and half apound each of elemi and of wax.

Herbip. ; and Van Mons prescribe onepart each of oil, of liquid storax, of elemi,and of wax, and two parts of resin. — Suec.— one and a half of oil, and seven each, ofthe four other ingredients.
