The root (Radix Rusci sen Bmsci seuMyrtaeanthtp) is employed. It is long, lig-neous, white, and consists of numerousfibres of the thickness of quills. Its tasteis at first sweetish, and then becomes bitter.
It is diuretic. — It forms one of the fivemajor aperitive roots.

The leaves (Herba Uvularice seu Hypo-glossi sen Bislinguœ seu Bonifacio; seu ¿amiAlexandrini augustifolice) are employed.They are oval and lanceolate, and bear to-wards the middle of their upper surface, aligula in the angle of which the flowers rise.
They are destitute of odour but have avery astringent taste.
It is slightly astringent, but is not muchused.

The herb and seeds are employed.
The herb (Herba Rutee seu Rutee horten-sia) consists of a cylindrical and branchingstem, and of alternate, petiolated leaves ofa glaucous green colour, almost doubly
winged, and composed of thickish, oval,obtuse leaflets, narrowed at the base. Ithas a strong, peculiar, and disagreeableodour, and a hot, acrid, and very bitter taste.
The seeds are small, blackish, reniform,wrinkled, somewhat angular, and of auaromatic taste.
It is excitant, stomachic, nervine, dia-phoretic, carminative, anti-putrescent, ano-dyne, ai.d anthelmintic. — Dose, from tengrains to two scruples, of the powder.
