RHEUM.—RHUBARB.

Cold Water, eight pounds,

and strain again. Mix the liquor, and eva-porate in a water-hath to the consistence ofsyrup ; then pour the liquor into dishes toabout the depth of two lines, and evaporateto dryness, in an oven or water-bath, thendetach the scales. (Gall.)

This is the Essential Salt of Rhubarb.Dose, from fifteen to twenty grains.

ALCOHOLIC EXTRACT OF RHUBARB.

Extractum Rhei seu Rharbarbari alcoholi-cum. (Lond. ; Dubl. ; Fuld. ; Lusit. ;Pol. ; Sax. ; Herbip. ; Coxe)

Extraction Rhei. (LoND.J DuBL.)

R. Rhubarb, in Powder,

one pound.Proof Spirit, one pint.

Water, seven pints.

Macerate for four days in a mode-rate heat ; then strain the liquor, andset it apart that the i'eculencies maysubside. Pour off the clear liquor,and evaporate it to the proper con-sistence.

R. Rhubarb, sliced, \ of each,

Alcohol, J two pounds.

Water, nine pounds.

Digest for twelve hours, and express ;distil off the alcohol, and evaporate the re-sidue to the consistence of an extract.(Pol.)

Fold. ; and Herbip. prescribe one poundof rhubarb, one of alcohol, and eight poundsof water ; to be digested for three days. —Sax. — two parts of rhubarb, three of alco-hol, and nine of water ; to be digested fortwenty-four hours. — Coxe gives the sameformula as Lond.R. Rhubarb, in powder, one pound.

Alcohol, four pounds.

Digest for foui days, and decant ; boilthe residue with

Water, ten pounds,

till reduced to two : strain the decoctionand evaporate ; then distil the tincture tothe consistence of honey, mix it with theevaporated decoction, and evaporate themixture, constantly stirring, to the properconsistence. (Lusit.)

It is to be taken at the same dose as thepreceding.

COMPOUND EXTRACT OF RHUBARB.

Extraction Rhei compositum seu catholicumseupanchymayogumsea cnico-pharmacum.

R. Extract of Rhubarb,------------- Aloes,

three ounces,one ounce.

Soften them in alcohol in a vessel placedin a water-bath, and evaporate to the con-sistence of pilular mass. (Pol.)R. Extract of Rhubarb, three ounces.

------------- Aloes, one ounce.

Mix, and add

Soap of Jalap, dissolved in

alcohol, one ounce.

Evaporate in a water-bath to a properconsistence. (Olden. ; Borus. ; Sax. ;Niemann)

Dan. prescribes two ounces of extract ofrhubarb, five drams of extract of aloes, andone ounce of soap of jalap, dissolved inalcohol.

R. Extract of Rhubarb, two ounces.

Aqueous Extract of Aloes,

half an ounce.Extract of Black Hellebore,

one dram thirty-six grains.Mix in a heated mortar withResin of Jalap, in powder,

two drams twenty-four grains.Preserve for use. (Piderit)R. Rhubarb, one ounce.

Seeds of Distaff-thistle, four ounces.Polypody of the Oak, two ounces.

Ginger, two drams.

Senna, of each, two

Indian Jalap, J ounces and a half.Agaric, six drams.

Scammony, ten drams.

Manna, two ounces and a half.

Infuse the agaric, scammony, and jalap,at several times in two pounds of alcohol,in order to exhaust them ; then maceratethe others in three pounds of water, andboil to the consumption of one third, addingtowards the end the residue of the spiritu-ous extraction : then express, dissolve themanna in the liquor, clarify the solution,mix it with the spirituous extract, dissipatethe alcohol with a gentle heat, and evapo-rate to the consistence of soft extract.(Palat.)

It is purgative. — The dose of the last isfrom a scruple to half a dram, withoutmanna, and from a dram to four scrupleswith manna.
