The seeds (Semines IMhospermi senMilii solis) are employed. They are small,very hard, and covered with a brilliantpearl-grey envelope. They are destitute ofodour, and have a sweetish, oleaginous, andsub-astringent taste.

It used formerly to be considered Hthon-triptic ; it has also been recommended indysentery, where it may sometimes actusefully as demulcent.

LOBELIA.

Two species of this genus are used :

1 . Lobelia inflata, Willd. — Indian Tobacco.Synonime :— Lobélie renflée, Fr.Amer. ; Coxe.

A plant of North America. (PentandriaMonogynia, Linn. ; Lobeliaceœ,3uss.)

The leaves are oblong, sessile, and slightlyserrated. They are at first insipid, butsoon develope a pungent taste, and excitean abundant secretion of saliva.

From ten to twenty grains of the powderare given as emetic and sudorific.

TINCTURE OF INDIAN TOBACCO.

Tinclura Lobelice inflates. (Amer. ; Nie-mann)

R. Dried Herb of Indian Tobacco,

two ounces.Dilute Alcohol, one pint.

Digest for ten days, and filter.

It is stimulant, and is extolled by Thatch-er, in spasmodic asthma. — Dose, a tea-spoonful.

2. Lobelia syphilitica, Linn. — Blue Cardinal

The root (Radix Lobelia;) is employed.It is composed of slender, white fibres, ofseveral fingers' length. It has a disagreeableand virous odour. When fresh its taste isvery acrid, but less so after desiccation, be-coming then similar to that of tobacco, andvery persistent.

It is stimulant, emetic, and purgative ;and has also been classed among the anti-syphilitics.

R. Dried Root of Blue Cardinal Flower,half an ounce.Spring Water, twelve pounds.

Boil down to two-thirds, and strain,—Dose, a glassful.
