LIGNUM NEPHRITICUM.—NEPHRITIC WOOD.

This wood is very heavy. It is formed ofa whitish, compact alburnum, and of a red-dish, very hard axis ; the bark is light, fi-

brous internally, fungus and cracked exter-nally. Its taste somewhat resembles thatof pepper.

It is supposed to belong either to theGuilandina Moringa, Linn., to the Mimosaunguis cali, Linn., or, according to Virey,to a Cissampelos. It comes from New Spain.

Powerful diuretic virtues were formerlyattributed to it. It is rarely used at present.

LIGNUM RHODIL—RHODIUM WOOD.

Synonimes: — Bois de Rhodes, Bois derose, Bois de Chypre, Fr. ; Rosenholz,Rhodisherholz, Germ.

This wood is hard, heavy, of a fawn-yel-low colour, deeper in the centre than at thecircumference, and formed of very closeconcentric layers. Its taste is bitterish, andits odour strongly rosaceous, particularlywhen rasped.

It is generally believed to come from theroot and sometimes from the stump of theConvolvulus scoparius, Linn., a large treeof the Canary Isles. {Pentandria Monogy-nia, Linn.; Convolvulácea, Juss.) — Someauthors ascribe it to the Genista Canarien-sis, Linn. ; but it most probably belongsto the former.

It is stimulant, but is not much used.

R. Rhodium Wood, rasped, ten parts.Muriate of Soda, one part.

Water, twenty parts.

Macerate for twelve hours ; then distil,and collect the oil which sinks to the bot-tom of the receiver. (Gall.)

Bruns. ; and Wirtem. prescribe sixparts of wood, one part of muriate, andthirty-six parts of water. — Fuld. — one ofwood and four of water ; to be digested forfour days. — Palat. — one of wood and sixof water ; to be digested for five or six days.

This oil is rather used as a perfume thanas a medicament.

R. Rhodium Wood, rasped, two parts.Water, sixteen parts.

Infuse for twelve hours, and distil eightparts.

This wood is met with in pieces of varioussizes, without bark, cut longitudinally, of afine red colour, grooved with fibres, between
