LIGNUM EBENUM.—EBONY WOOD.

R. Logwood, one ounce.
Water, one pound.
Boil down to one half, and add, if required,
Tincture of Cinchona,---------------- Opium,
one ounce,thirty drops.
two ounces,four pounds.
Mix.R. Logwood,
Spring Water,Boil down to two pounds and a half, andadd,
Alcohol, four ounces.
Cinnamon, four scruples.
Boil for a few moments, and strain.(Herbip.)
It is astringent, and is recommended indiarrhoea, chronic dysentery, and haemor-rhages. — Dose, two ounces, every fourhours or more frequently.

Boil down to one half, after twen-ty-four hours' maceration ; then strainwhile hot, and evaporate to the pro-per consistence.

Macerate for twenty-four hours, thenboil for a quarter of an hour, and express ;boil the residue with four parts of water.Mix the decoctions, set aside for twenty-four hours, and evaporate. (Sax. J

Hann. directs one part of wood to beboiled in six parts of water twice or thricein succession, and the mixed strained liquorto be evaporated. — Pol. — it to be boiled atfour different times in eight pounds of wa-ter, and for a quarter of an hour each time.

Alcohol, a sufficient quantity
to cover it by four fingers' breadth ; digestin a moderate heat, and then decant : boilthe residue for one hour in water, express,and evaporate the liquor in a water-bath tothe consistence of honey, gradually addingthe tincture, constantly stirring, that a uni-form mass may be obtained. A dense, heavy, black wood, of a sensi-ble taste.
It is from the Diospyros Ebenurn, Linx.,
a large tree of the East Indies. [Polyga-mia Diœcia, Linn. ; Ebenaceœ, Juss. ;Fig. Rumph. Ami. p. 13. t. 6.)
It used formerly to be considered as asudorific equal to Guaiac wood.
