any quantity.

Bruise them in a stone mortar,sprinkling them with a little water ;then express the juice, and evaporateit in a water-bath, constantly stirringtowards the end with a spatula.

Fuld. ; Hamb. ; Lipp. ; Ross. ; Herbip. ;and Brugnatelli give the same formula.

Swediaür directs ten pounds of leavesto be bruised, adding six pounds of water tothem ; the juice to be expressed, to bebrought to a single boil, and then to be eva-porated immediately.R. Herb of Virous Lettuce, one pound.

Bruise it in a marble mortar, and expressthe juice ; boil the residue for an hour withthree pounds of water, and express. Mixthe liquors, and evaporate. (Hass.)R. Fresh Herb of Virous Lettuce,

Express the juice, and keep it for twentyhours in a cool place that it may not fer-ment ; decant, boil for a few moments, andstrain through flannel; clarify with whiteof egg, and strain again : then evaporate theliquor slowly to one half, let it cool, clarifyagain with white of egg, and strain: finally,evaporate it to the required consistence.

Bruise them with a little water, and passthrough a sieve ; set aside, decant, coaguluteat the fire, and strain again : then evaporateto the consistence of pilular mass, remove itfrom the fire, incorporate the fécula setapart, and evaporate again to the properconsistence. (Ant. ; Van Mons)

Gall, prescribes five thousand parts offresh lettuce, and twelve thousand five hun-dred of water ; ten thousand parts to bedistilled, and poured upon asimilar quantityof fresh lettuce, adding ten thousand partsof water; ten thousand parts to be againdistilled, and the operation to be repeated athird time.

Dose, from half an ounce to two ounces.

R. Juice of Virous Lettuce, "I of each,recently expressed, > an equalConcentrated Alcohol, part.

Macerate without heat for several days,and filter. (Sax.)

R. Herb of Virous Lettuce, one ounce.Cinnamon, one dram.

Concentrated Alcohol, 1 of each,

Distilled Water, J four ounces.

Digest for several days, express, and fil-ter. (Niemann)

It is stimulant and narcotic. — Dose, fif-teen drops, to be gradually augmented.
