LACTUCA.— LETTUCE.

spirit. — Ant. — one ounce of lac, two drains

of alum, and one pound of spirit.

R. Pure Lac, one ounce.

Alum, dissolved in waier,

one dram and a half.

Spirit of Scurvy-grass, eight ounces.

Digest till the liquor is of a fine red co-lour, and filter. (Hisp.)

This is for the same uses as the simpletincture ; but it is more astringent.

Three species of this genus of plants areemployed :

1. Lactuca sativa, Linn. — Garden Lettuce.

This plant is cultivated in gardens, "whereit has produced numerous varieties. (Syn-genesia Polygamia JEqualis, Linn. ; St/nan-thereœ, Cass.; Fig. Flore Medic.IV. 213.)

The herb and seeds are employed.

The herb (Herba Lactuca') is composedof oblong, oval, undulated leaves, of awatery sweetish taste.

The seeds are long, flattened, pointed atboth ends, and of a grey colour.

2. Lactuca Scariola, Linn.Synonime :— Laitue sauvage, Fr.

The herb (Herba Lactucœ sylvestris seuscariola;) is employed. It consists of alter-nate, sessile, amplexicaul, long leaves, sa-gittate at the base, and acute at the summit.They are usually pinnatifid, bordered withsome spinescent teeth, and glabrous. Ithas a disagreeable odour, and a bitter taste.

3. Lactuca virosa, Linn. — Virous Lettuce,Strong-scented Lettuce, Hemlock Let-tuce.

The herb (Herba Lactucœ virosœ seu In-tybi angustí) is employed. It is composedof alternate, sessile, embracing, long,notched leaves, obtuse at the top, and thelower ones sinuated and toothed. It has anauseous odour, and an acrid and very bittertaste.

The garden lettuce is considered as a se-dative, but it undoubtedly acts only as anemollient. [I think M. Jourd an is mistakenin this opinion. — Edit.] — Dose, of thejuice, from half an ounce to two ounces. —As to the virous, it is exceedingly stimu-lant : it acts on the nervous system, and isalso diuretic.

Bruise them in a stone mortar,sprinkling them with a littie water ;then express the juice, and evaporateit unstrained till it acquires the pro-per consistence.
