FERRUM.— IRON.
Alcohol, ten parts
and preserve it. Gall.
Ant. directs a soft paste to be made withthree ounces of filings and ten of supertar-trate, which is to be left in repose for twenty-four hours ; then twelve pounds of water tobe added, and the mixture to be boiled fortwo hours, stirring from time to time : theliquid then to be set aside and decanted.The residuum to be boiled with eight poundsof water for two hours, and the decantedliquor to be mixed with the former : themixture to be finally evaporated to the con-sistence of syrup, and two onnces of alco-hol (30 degrees) to be added to it. — Hisp. —to be boiled together for twelve hours, eightounces of filings, sixteen of supertartrate,and sixteen of water, adding occasionally alittle fresh water; the liquor to be then de-canted and evaporated to the consistence ofa soft extract. Three ounces of this extractto be digested for eight days in a mixtureof one pound of white wine and half anounce of alcohol ; and the liquor to befinally filtered. — Belg. — five ounces offilings and twenty of supertartrate to be re-duced to a paste with a sufficient quantityof water ; the mixture to be heated almostto dryness, constantly stirring it : freshwater to be then added, and the same ope-ration to be repeated for six times in suc-cession at least. The mass to be then dried,pulverized, macerated in four pounds ofwhite wine, and finally strained. — Genev.— a paste to be made with six ounces of fi-lings and one pound of supertartrate ; twelvepounds of water to be added at the expira-tion of twenty-four hours, and boiled fortwo : the decanted liquor to be then evapo-rated to the consistence of thick syrup, andone ounce of alcohol added to it. — Ferr. —one pound of tincture of iron to be boiledwith two pounds of supertartrate and sixpounds of water ; this to be reduced to twoounces, and four pounds of alcohol addedto it.
Boutron-Charlard has ascertainedthat in this operation, not only proto-tar-trate of potass and of iron is formed, butalso neutral tartrate of iron, which is inso-luble and separates under the form of a red-dish coloured deposit.R. Proto-tartrate of Potass and

R. Sulphate of Iron, "I of each,
Supertartrate of Potass, j four ounces.
Pure Water, six pounds.
Boil for one hour in an iron vessel, then
set it aside, and decant the liquor. Boil the
residuum with
Pure Water, three pounds.
Filter the two liquors, and evaporatethem together to dryness, stirring constant-ly; pulverize the residuum, and put one partof it in digestion for six days with six partsof alcohol (30 degrees) ; pour off the liquid,add to the residuum two other parts of thesame alcohol, and at the end of two daysdecant again the liquid : finally mix toge-ther and filter the two tinctures. Batav. directs four ounces of sulphateof iron, four ounces of supertartrate, andsix pounds of water, to be boiled togethertill the mass becomes perfectly dried : thisto be digested with four pounds of whitewine, and the liquor to be filtered at the endof several days.
R. Sulphate of Iron, one ounce.
Supertartrate of Potass, four ounces.Pure Water, six pounds.
Boil together, stirring continually, till themass becomes almost dry : expose it for se-veral days to the air, that it may becomemoist, then add to it
Cinnamon Water, four ounces.
Alcohol, eight ounces.
Boil for one hour ; when cold, decantand filter the liquor. (Wirtem.)
Palat. gives the same process, prescri-bing equal parts, namely, four ounces each,of the sulphate and supertartrate.R. Sulphate of Iron, four ounces.
Supertartrate of Potass, eight ounces.Water, one hundred ounces.
Boil to the consistence of honey ; thenadd to the mass,
Proof Spirit, sixty ounces.
