TINCTURE OF IRON AND OF ORANGE.

Tinctura Ferri aurantiaca seu Martis cumVino Malvatico et Pomis aurantiis. ( Wiu-TEM. ; Niemann)

R. Iron Filings, four ounces.

Bitter Oranges, four.

Remove the peel, the white, and the seedsof the oranges ; pound the peel and thepulp with the filings, in a stone mortar, andleave the mass in repose for two days : thenadd to it

Madeira Wine, ten ounces.

Spirit of Orange Peel, two ounces.Digest for a sufficient time, express, andfilter.

It is tonic, astringent, stomachic, andcarminative.

Dose, from half a dram to two scruples.

CITRONATED TROCHISCS OF IRON.

Trochisci Citratis Ferrici. (Suec. ; VanMons)

R. Citric Acid,

Black Oxide of Iron,

one part,two parts.

Triturate together, and incorporate with

Sugar, boiled à la plume, sixteen parts.

Divide the mass into trochiscs. (VanMons)

R. Iron Filings, one part.

Lemon Juice, four parts.

Digest for three days, frequently shakingthe vessel ; then having boiled it slowly toone half, add

White Sugar, an equal weight

to that of the mass. Finally, evaporate itto the proper consistence, and divide it intotrochiscs.

PROTO-TARTRATE OF POTASSIUM AND OFIRON.

Ferrum tartarisatum seu potabile, Mars so-lubile, tarlarus chalybeatus seu chaly-beatus solubilis seu mar/ialis seu martialissolubilis, Tariras kalico-ferricum seu Po-tassa; ferruyinosus seu Potassai et Ferriseu Potassce ferrosus, seuferratus, Cha-lybs tartarisatus.

Ferrum Tartarizatum. (Lond.)

R. Supertartrate of Potass,

two pounds.

Pure Iron Filings, one pound.

Distilled Water, five pints ; or,a sufficient quantity.Triturate the supertartrate and theiron filings together, and expose themixture in an open glass vessel withone pint of water, to the action of theair for twenty days, stirring the massdaily, and keeping it always moistby occasionally adding distilled wa-ter. Then boil it in the four remain-ing pints of water for fifteen minutes,and filter the liquor. Finally evapo-rate the tartarized iron to dryness bythe heat of a water-bath, reduce it topowder, and preserve it in a well-stopped bottle.

R. Purified Iron Filings, one part.

Pulverized Supertartrate ofPotass, two parts.

Water, one part.

Rub them together, and exposethem to the air in a shallow earthen-vessel for fifteen days, stirring themass daily with a spatula, and keep-ing it moist by occasional additionsof water. Then boil the whole for ashort time with four times its weightof water, and pour off the solutionfrom the feces. Evaporate the li-quor to dryness by the heat of a wa-ter-bath, and having reduced themass to powder, preserve it in a well-stopped bottle.
