R. Pioto-cbloruret of Iron, one part.

Swediaur directs the chloruret to beexposed to the air till it has fallen into de-liquescence. This method is bad, for tlieproto-chloruret of iron, abandoned thus toitself, absorbs not only humidity, but alsooxygen, and passes into the state of deutoor trito-hydrochlorate.

This is every where confounded with thepreceding under the common name of Mu-riate of Iron.
1. In the solid state.Belg.
R. Iron Filings, one ounce.
Put them into a matrass placed in a sand-bath and sufficiently large to contain twen-ty-four ounces of water. Pour upon them
Hydrochloric Acid, six ounces ;
or, a sufficient quantity to dissolve the me-tal completely. Add to the solution
Hydrochloric Acid, two ounces,
and heat it to boiling. Then add to it, gut-tatim,
Nitric Acid, a sufficient quantity ;
or, till it has ceased to excite effervescence,and the liquor has acquired a reddish-browntint. Evaporate with a sufficiently strongheat, down to one half, then with a gentleheat, continually stirring, till a drop beingplaced upon a cold body, becomes solidi-fied : then withdraw it from the fire, andset it aside to cool, stirring the mass^ conti-nually, till it becomes solid ; finally encloseit in a well-stopped vessel.
2. In the liquid stale.
Compound Solution of Muriate of Iron,Loof's Styptic Liquor. — Liquor styptieus,Solatia styptica Looffii seu Muriatis Fer-ri composita.

Put them into a matrass placed in a sand-bath, and pour upon them a mixture of
Hydrochloric Acid, eight parts.
Nitric Acid, four parts.
When dissolved, pour off the liquor, eva-porate it to dryness and dissolve the resi-duum in
Pure Water, nine parts.
Preserve the liquor in a dark place. (Ba-var.)
R. Residuum of the sublimation of theHydrochlorate of Ammonia andof Iron, any quantity.
Put it into a glass capsule, and leave itin a cellar till it has fallen into deliques-cence. (Amst.; Batav.; Dan.)

It is tonic and astringent. — This liquoris frequently employed in Belgium in casesof passive uterine haemorrhage. — Dose,from three to six drops, every hour or twohours, in any mucilaginous drink.
