R. Pearl Barley,Raisins,Liquorice, grated and

bruised,Herb of Borage,

Water,

Cichory,

of each,two ounces.

of each,three ounces,twelve pounds.

Boil to the consumption of one fourth ;then express lightly, and pour the boilingliquor upon

make a syrup in a water-bath. Expresslightly, and strain that which remains inthe cucurbit ; clarify the liquor, and add

White Sugar, three pounds,

and make a syrup. Mix this while hot withthe preceding. (Gall.)

Two species of this genus of plants areemployed in medicine.

A plant of Europe. (Pentandria Mono-gynia, Linn. ; Gentianeœ, Juss. ; Fig.Zorn, le. pi. t. 154.)

The flowering tops (Herba et Flores seuComee ßoridfß seu Summitates seu Cacitmi-na cum Floribus Centaurii minoris seafebri-fwji seu Fellis Ferrce) are employed. Theyconsist of opposite branches, furnished withglabrous, lanceolated, opposite leaves ; thebranches are terminated by corymbs ofdeep-rose coloured flowers. They are ino-dorous, and have a bitter taste.

They are tonic, stomachic, and febrifuge.

Dose, from a scruple, to one dram ofthe powder ; of the juice from one to twoounces.

bitter anti-arthritic powder.

Palat. prescribes one part of flowers,

and two parts of water ; one part and a half

to be distilled.
