Liquor Calcis. (Lond.)

R. Lime, lialf a pound.

Boiling Distilled Water,

twelve pints.Pour the water upon the lime, andstir them together ; then cover thevessel, and set it aside for three hours.Preserve the solution upon the un-dissolved lime in well stopped glassbottles, and pour it off clear whenwanted for use,

R. Fresh-burnt Lime,

half a pound.

Put it into an earthen vessel, andsprinkle upon it

Water, four ounces.

Keep the vessel covered till thelime becomes hot and falls into pow-der; then pour upon it

Water, twelve pounds,

and stir the mixture. When thelime shall have subsided stir again ;repeat this ten times, keeping thevessel closed, to prevent the accessof air. Lastly, filter the solutionthrough paper, interposing glass rodsbetween the paper and funnel, thatthe solution may pass through asquickly as possible, and preserve itin well stopped bottles.

Cold Water, thirty parts.

Close the vessel again, and shakethe mixture frequently for twenty-four hours ; then pour off the clearsolution, and preserve it in well stop-ped bottles.

R. Lime, any quantity.

Sprinkle it with water to slake it, andwhen it has fallen to powder, mix it withmore water. Pour off and reject the liquidwhen it has become clear ; then add freshwater to the residue, proceed as at the firsttime, and preserve the limpid liquor.(Gael.; Ferr. ; Brugnatelli)

These three pharmacopoeias are silent asto the quantity of water to be employed.The others do not follow their example.Fold. ; and Lipp. prescribe six parts ofwater. One part of lime requires about four hun-dred parts of water to dissolve it.

According to the observation of Descroi-tilles, quick lime holds six or seven percent, of potass, which it acquires from thecombustible employed in calcining it. Thispotass being most soluble, is taken up al-most entirely by the first liquid put in con-tact with the lime. Besides containingpotass, the first lime water is ascertained tobe more active than the second. Plancheproposes to designate the first as PotassatedLime Water {Eau de Chaux Potassée).Sard, directs two solutions to be prepared,an Agua Calcis prima, and an Aqua Calcissecunda; the first by treating lime witheight parts of water, and the second, bytreating the residue with seven parts ofwater.

The solution of lime having a great affi-nity for carbonic acid, is very subject tolose its oxide ; to keep it therefore alwaysat the same degree of saturation, it wouldbe better, as Lond. ; Amst. ; and Coxedirect, to leave at the bottom of the vessela certain quantity of hydrate of lime. Thesolution might be carefully decanted or fil-tered when wanted to be used.

It is strongly astringent, and even stimu-lant. It is recommended in all diseases at-tributed to atony of the solids or acidity ofthe fluids, such as diarrhoea, diabetes, scro-fula, leucorrhcea, and scurvy, and in ver-mical disorders.

As to the lithontriptic properties whichhave been attributed to it, before admittingthem, it requires to be shown that the limepasses unaltered from the stomach into thebladder, and that it arrives there in suffi-cient quantity to decompose a calculus
