NEW EXPERIMENTS

TRACT 34.

the sum of the weights 934, we shall have 934 :17:: 37 : O'67the change in the distance of the centre of gravity ; whichbeing subtracted from 80 - 47, leaves 79'8 for the distance ofthe new compound centre of gravity.

Also the correction for the value of n will be determined

., i c i Hnlinn 140850) i 1

by the usual formula .... in which

J 281700 pg + bi(i7in + 140850)

b = 17, i = 43-5, n = 400, p = 917, and g = 83-47 ; whichvalues, being used in that formula, give 0'1 for the correc-tion of n; to which add 400, and we shall have 40-1 for thenew value of n, or number of oscillations per minute, forthe gun n° 2 ; and consequently 40-2 for n° I, and 40'0 forn° 3, and 39 - 9 for n° 1. Hence then the new values for thegun n° 2 are thus :

g g n t r

934 79-8 40-1 89-15 1000

Then, using these values of g, g, n, i, r, in the formula

v 5 ^ 00 - x - above-mentioned, it becomes96 Inrn 7

205 c

v = ~jg~ x y f° r the velocity by the recoil of thegun ; where b is the weight of the ball, and c the differencebetween the chords of .recoil with and without a ball.

And when b 1-047 lb = 16 oz 12 dr, the same theoremis v 12-Jc for the gun. n° 2. And every £ dram in thevalue of b will alter this theorem by the jijth part nearly.

Also for the gun n° 1 the above velocity must be de-creased by the 400th part, and for n° 3 increased by the40Oth part, and for n° 4 increased by the 200th part.
