During his mastership, pope Pius jII. greatly softened the rules of the jOrder relating to fasting, whichwere remarkably severe; for theknights were not allowed, eitherin Advent or Lent, to drink aftersupper : they were also forbidden tospeak at table, or in bed, and werenot permitted to sleep with a light intheir rooms.
