CHAPTER I.

The Order of St. John first established at Jerusalem; afterwards in the Island ofRhodes. Rhodes besieged by Solyman. The gallant Defence made by LlsleAdam. Number of his Troops. One of the principal Dignitaries of the Orderput to Death for Treason. Surrender of the Island. Depredations of theTurks, which were almost immediately stopped, and the Arms and Escutcheonsbelonging to the Knights preserved. Solyman visits the Grand-Master : theirConversation. The Knights embark, together with the Inhabitants, and takewith them the Archives of the Order and the Relics. Their Fleet is forced, bya Tempest, to take Shelter in the Island of Cyprus; after which it arrives onthe Coast of Naples, and anchors at Messina. The Pope issues a Bull to pre-vent the Knights quitting the Grand-Master. Trial of those Knights who had
