He, together with the Venetians,took possession of the city of Patras.

He likewise, assisted by the samepower, attempted the conquest ofthe Morea; but was surprised bythe Turks, and taken prisoner . 1378

He was ransomed by his family,and returned to Rhodes in. 1381

During the schism of Urban VI.and Clement VII. the grand-masterdeclared himself in favour of thelatter; upon which Urban namedRichard Caraccioli grand-master;and he was acknowledged as suchby the languages of Italy and En-gland. Caraccioli died at Rome onthe 18th of March..

He purchased the Morea fromThomas Palaeologus; but so greatwas the hatred which subsisted be-tween the Greeks and Latins, thatthe bargain could not possibly becarried into effect.

Tamerlane took Smyrna by storm,notwithstanding the brave defencemade by the knights ..
