Till that time there was no distinc-tion between the Knights Hospital-lers and the Serving Brothers : popeAlexander IV., in a bull of the idesof August, issued orders, that theKnights should wear a black cloak,damydes nigras, to distinguish themfrom the Serving Brothers; andwhen in battle, a kind of red petti-coat, with other ornaments of thesame colour ; and a white cross em-broidered on them, in the same styleas on the banners .
