At the end of this mastership, theOrder had in different places 3500

chapels .

The grand-master, in a letter rela- 1237tive to the equipment of a vessel forthe Holy Land, forbad any jewels,gold, or silver, being taken, exceptlaced-hats.

This grand-master died in . 1241

though some authors pretend helived till 1248.

The Kharismians entered Palestineat the request of Nogemadin, soudan

of Egypt .

They took Jerusalem.

A bloody battle, which lasted twodays, the 17th and 18th of October,1244. The grand-master was slain,and only sixteen Hospitallers escapedthe sword of the Infidels. SebastianPaoli places the death of the grand-master in 1243, according to a char-ter of his successor : but there wascertainly a mistake in the date ofthat writing...
