The grand-master travelled west-ward, and assisted at the council ofLyons, where he took place of allthe ambassadors and peers of France.

A general chapter held at Cesareo.Fresh taxes laid on each house be-longing to the Order, to go towardsthe expenses of the war. The mo-ney raised by these taxes was to bepaid every year into the treasury ofthe Order.

All letters of commission havingthe expression We recommend toyou, Domino Commcndamus, Vertotconcludes that the titles of Com-manderies and Commanders camefrom thence : but these titles are ofa more ancient date. There is stillin existence a charter of Henrycount of Champagne, given on the4th of June, 1194, in which thereappear among the witnesses, FraterRobertas Anglicus, tunc CommendatorDomus Hospitalis acconensis. It is,however, a fact, that in former timescommanders were most commonlycalled Preceptors, and their bene-fices Preceptories.
