The same pope, by a bull, tookthe Order under the immediate pro-tection of the apostolical see.

The Order divided into seven lan-guages, viz. Provence, Auvergne,France, Italy, Arragon, Germany,and England. The priories, baili-wicks, and commanderies were atthat time in common.

Alphonso, king of Arragon, leavesby will his dominions to be dividedbetween the Hospitallers, the KnightsTemplars, and the Knights of theHoly Sepulchre .

Brompton, and Roger Hoveden,contemporary English historians, callRaymond Grand-Master: but theonly title given hitherto by the popeswas that of Master.

Bonnier was mistaken in sayingthat Raymond took upon himself thename of Grand-Master .

Raymond and his knights distin-guished themselves on different occa-sions.

6’th.They took fort Besabec, sincecalled Gebelet.

7th. They forced the sultan Ki-lidge Arslan to quit Phoenicia.

8th. They assisted in the captureof Ascalon .
