Pope Calixtus II. issued anotherbull on the 19th of June: whichgives reason to believe he was stillalive at that time, though he wasgenerally supposed to have died in1118. In the ancient bulls andcharters he is entitled Provost andGuardian of the Hospital of St.John of Jerusalem.

Dauphine, Some authors insist that he wasin France, an Italian, born at Florence. Amodern writer declares the place ofhis birth to be Lucca. Notwith-standing all that has been said to thecontrary, he certainly was the im-mediate successor of Gerard, andnot Fra. Broyant Roger.

The Order became military, andtook the oaths to the patriarch ofJerusalem.

An act passed the 9th of Decem-ber between the brothers of theHospital and the chapter of thechurch of Tripoli, in which Ray-mond w as entitled Master and Fatherof the Hospital of St. John of Jeru-salem. Raymond was the first whotook the title of Master of the SacredHospital of St. John of Jerusalem.He bestowed a particular habit onthe members of the Order, and madethe first regulations, not in a gene-ral chapter, but in a particular as-sembly held in the convent. Inthese first statutes, two classes ofbrothers are alone mentioned, viz.the Clerks and the Laicks. Thedistinction betw'een knights of armsand servants of arms did not takeplace till the pontificate of Anasta-sius IV. in 1153.
