Batav. ; and Belg. prescribe twenty-four hours' digestion and two hours' ebul-lition with ten parts of water, the ebullitionof the residue for two hours with eightparts of water, and the evaporation of themixed liquors. — Amst. — the ebullition ofthe stalks with twenty pounds of water, tillreduced to one half, then with fifteen tillreduced to one half, and the evaporation ofthe mixed liquors,

R. Stalks of Bitter-sweet, one part.

Boiling Water, eight parts.

Boil slowly for a quarter of an hour, andexpress ; boil the residue with

Water, four parts,

and express again. Set aside the mixed de-coctions, decant after sufficient repose, andevaporate slowly to the consistence of anextract. (Hann. ; Olden.; Bokus.)

Austb. ; and Pol. direct the stalks tobeexhausted by several successive ebullitions,the liquors to be mixed, decanted, and eva-porated in a water-bath. — Brugnatelli —the stalks to be boiled for two hours withsix parts of water, then a second time withfresh water, and the mixed decoctions tobeevaporated.

R. Stalks of Bitter-sweet, half a pound.Spring Water, two pounds.

Digest in a moderate heat for two days,and decant the liquor ; repeat the digestiontill the water comes off tasteless ; then mixthe liquors, and evaporate to the consistenceof an extract. (Palat. ; Wirtem.)

Boiling Water, one pound.

Infuse for half an hour ; then boil for aquarter of an hour, and strain.

It is diaphoretic. — Dose, a spoonful everytwo hours.

Amer. ; Coxe ; and Ellis give the sameformula. — Swediaur — from half an ounceto one ounce of stalks and three pounds of wa-ter, to be boiled down to two thirds. — Ra-tier — one ounce of stalks and two pounds ofwater. — Ph. Syph. — half a dram of stalksand one pound of water, to be boiled down toone half. — Genev. — one ounce of stalksand four pounds of water, to be boiled downto two. — Augustin- — two drams of stalksand two pounds of water, to be boiled downto one.
