Gall.
An original tree of America, but natu-
ralized in Europe. (Diadelphi Decandria,Linn. ; Leguminosa*, Jiiss. ; Fig. Nouv.Duh. II. t. 16)
Its bark is purgative and emetic.

This is a solid colouring paste, of a very-deep violet-red colour, and of a strong anddisagreeble smell.
It is prepared from the Roccella finc/oria,Cand., a cryptogamous plant which growson the rocks of the Canaries, of Cape Verd,and of the Archipelago. (Fig- Pluk. Aim.t. 255, f. 6)— The Variolaria orcina, Ach.also yields it, but this is of an inferiorquality.

A shrub cultivated in every garden ofEurope. (Icosandria Polygynia, Linn.,Rosacea;, Juss. ; Fig. Zorn, le. pi. t. 600)
The flowers (Flores Rosarum incarnata-rum seu pallidarum) are employed. Theyconsist of oval, entire petals, of a pale red-dish colour. Their odour is very agree-able, but is almost entirely removed by de-siccation ; their taste is bitterish, acrid,and styptic.
2. Rosa moschata, Ait. — Musk Rose.

An original shrub of the north of Africa.The flowers, according to Willdenow,are used in preparing the otto of roses.
3. Rosa alba, Linn. — White Rose.
Bruns.; Gall.; Wirtem. ; Bergius ;Murray and Gmelin; Spielmann;Zarda.
A shrub generally spread over Europe.(Fig. Œd. Fl. Dan. t. 1215)
Its flowers (Flores Rosa alba>) have anagreeable odour, and a bitterish and styptictaste.
4. Rosa Gallica— Red Rose, Provence Rose.
