LAURUS.
This tree is originally of Ceylon. (En-neandria Monogynia, Linn. ; Laurinece,Juss. ; Fig. Flore Medic. II. 92.)
The bark (Cortex Cinnamomi veri seuacutí seu Cannella Zeylanica) is employed.It is smooth, thin, flexible, papyraceous,rolled in long quills of about the diameterof the finger, and containing other smallerrolls ; it is ligneous, and exhibits a splintryfracture. It is of a reddish-yellow or fawncolour ; its odour very agreeable, and itstaste aromatic, rather acrid, sweet, andmixed with a slight astringency.
It contains a very acrid volatile oil, muchtannin, an azoted colouring matter, an acid,mucilage, and starch.
It is a powerful stimulant. — Dose, fromten grains to a scruple of the powder.

Niemann ; and Spielmann prescribeone of cloves, two of vanilla, twenty-four ofcinnamon, one hundred and twenty-eight ofrice, and one hundred and ninety-two ofsugar.
This powder is taken as chocolate.
