The coagulum which is found in the sto-mach of the calf, (Gall. ; Guibourt) ismixed with the acetic, hydrochloric, andbutyric acids which are secreted by the in-ternal surface of this stomach, and whichgive to it a sour smell.

By evaporating the serum or whey, thesugar of milk is obtained, Saccharum Lactis.

There are three sorts of lacs.

1. Stick Lac ; Lacea in ranvdis seu ramis(Laque en batons, Fr. ; Stangenlack,Germ.). This is of a more or less deep redcolour, nearly transparent, unequal, rough,hard, friable, forming a crust of someinches in length, and about a line in thick-ness, over a slender stick, which it rarelysurrounds entirely. It is pierced at its sur-face with a great many holes communica-ting with oval cellules placed against eachother without regularity, and from whencea white cottony substance comes out.

2. "Seed Lac; Lacea in granis (Laque engrains, Fr. ; Ksrnerlack, Germ.). Thisconsists of fragments of the preceding, de-tached from the branches.

3. Shell Lac, Lamp Lac ; Lacea in ta-

bnlis seu in massis (Laque en masses ou enI pains, Fr. ; Schellack, Germ.). This is inplates or thin scales, obtained by meltingeither of the preceding and thus presentingthe lac free from foreign substances.

Lac is produced by the puncture of thefemale of the Coccus lacea, Kerr, a kemip-terous insectof thelndies {Fig. Journ. compl.des Sc. med. t. X. p. 20), which it makes inthe bark of a great number of resinoustrees, among which we distinguish particu-larly the Ficus religiosa, Linn. ; the Crotóncastaneifolium, Linn. ; the Rharnnus Ju~juba, Linn. ; the Mimosa cinerea, Willd. ;and the Mimosa corinda, Willd. Vireythinks, in contradiction to the opinion ofLatreille, and justly, according to ap-pearance, that the insect does not elaboratethis substance, but that the production ofit is occasioned by the punctures which itmakes in the bark. He thinks that theresinous matter owes its fine colour to theinsect, from the purple-red colour withwhich the female and the eggs of the cochi-neal are impregnated.

It is composed, according to Funke, ofresin, of a peculiar matter, Laccin, inter-mediate between wax and resin, and of ananimal colouring matter. John says thathe has also found in it a peculiar acid,Laccic Acid.
