The fruit {Nunc Juglans seu Juglandis) isemployed. It is an oval drupe. Its exte-rior envelope ( Cortex seu Putamen NucisJuglandis) is green, fleshy, and of a bitterand extremely acerb taste. The nut whichit covers {Nucleus Nucis Juglandis) con-sists of a hard, shining, woody, yellowgrooved shell, inodorous and insipid, con-taining a four-lobed oleaginous kernel,very irregular in its surface, covered with ayellowish, thin, astringent pellicle (Epider-mis Nuclei Juglandis). It has an agree-able taste.

It is extolled by Strachwitz. — A spoon-ful to be taken morning and evening, beforemeals.

R. Ripe Walnuts, any quantity.
Remove the shells and partitions ; thenhaving bruised them in a stone mortar witha wooden pestle, enclose the paste in a linenbag, and express it between two tin plateswithout heat.
When fresh, this oil may be substitutedfor that of almonds.

R. Green Walnuts, one pound.
After having bruised them in a mortar,boil them for several hours with two poundsof water ; express, and evaporate the liquorto the proper consistence, with an equalweight of despumated honey. (Bruns. ;Fuld. ; Wirtem. ; Spielmann ; Swe-diaur)
R. Expressed Juice of Green Walnuts,
two pounds.Honey, one pound.

It is slightly astringent and resolvent,but is principally designed for external use.

It is excitant, tonic, bitter, anti-scorbu-tic, and anthelmintic. — Dose, from half ascruple to half a dram. — It used formerly tobe applied to cleanse foul ulcers, and alsoto syphilitic ulcers.
The extract of walnuts forms the basis ofMittié's Anti-syphilitic Remedy, of whichAlyon and Cadet de Gassicourt havegiven the two following different formulas :

Leaves of Angelica, of each,

Make an infusion ; evaporate, and dividethe extract into pills of six grains each.
Cadet de Gassicourt also prescribesthe following syrup :R. Walnut Leaves, twenty pounds.
Infuse them for twenty-four hours in hotwater ; pour the infusion upon
Leaves of Angelica, sixteen pounds.
Infuse again for twenty-four hours ; keepthe infusion hot in a water-bath, and aftera time pour it upon
