R. Mother Liquors of the Soda obtainedfrom Bladder-Wrack, any quantity.Add concentrated sulphuric acid to it inexcess, and boil the liquor slowly in a glassretort furnished with a receiver ; collect thebrilliant slender crystals which form in thelatter, wash them in a little cold water, anddry them slowly.
It is stimulant, powerfully irritant, andeven poisonous in large doses. Under cer-tain circumstances, it exercises upon themammary and thyroid glands, the hitterparticularly, a very remarkable action,making them waste away more or less. Ithas been recommended in the treatment ofscrofula and of goitre, of lymphatic swellingsof every kind, gonorrhoea, chronic leucor-rhcea, enlargement of the testicle, &c. Itis used both internally and externally ; butthe greatest circumspection is required inits administration, and it should be discon-tinued as soon as wasting of the flesh is seento come on : this wasting is said to be, ingeneral, the first symptom of its acting nox-iously. — Dose, from the eighth of a grain toone grain, twice a day, in pills.
As we have done with regard to arsenicand hydrocyanic acid, we shall collect intoone article all the preparations of this sub-stance, which appear to have an identical
action; we except only the mercurial iodu-rets which are placed in the article onmercury.
TINCTURE OF IODINE.
Tinctura seu Alcohol Iodii. (Bavar. ;Ferr. ; Bories ; Fee ; Magendie ; Nie-mann; Pierquin ; Ratier; Van Mons)
R. Iodine,
Alcohol (35 degrees),

Dissolve. (Ferr ; Bories ; Fee ; Ma-gendie ; Ratier)
Pierquin prescribes one part of iodine,and eight parts of alcohol. — Bavar. — oneof iodine, and nineteen of alcohol. — VanMons — one of iodine, and a little more thanten of alcohol. — Niemann — one of iodine,and seventeen of alcohol.
Twenty drops of the tincture made ac-cording to the first formula contains aboutone grain of iodine, and one drop weighstwo thirds of a grain. — Dose, for adults,from four to ten drops thrice a day in alittle sweetened water, augmenting it pro-gressively to twenty drops or more.
