HELMINTHOCORTON.—CORSICAN MOSS.
A plant of Europe. (Pentandria Mono-gnnia, Linn. ; Boragmea, Juss. ; Fig.Jacq. Fl. Austr. t. 207.)
The herb (Herba Verrucariœ seu Can-aris) is employed. It consists of branchingstems, furnished with short hairs and with
oval, petiolated leaves, somewhat hairy,wrinkled, and of a whitish-green colour.It has a bitter taste.
Its juice was formerly esteemed for oc-casioning the separation of warts.

This marine production is obtained chieflyfrom the coasts of Corsica. It has a dis-agreeable odour, and a saline and nauseoustaste.
It is a mixture of more than twenty, aswell marine plants as of what M. Lamou-äoux calls polypiers flexibles, as the FucusHelminthocorton, Latour., F. Cricoules,Good., F. barbatus, Good., T. Sodo'ides,Desf., T. faseiclo, Ro., Desmarestia acu-leata, Lux., Gigartina plicata, Lms., Ce-ramium catenatum, agagrophilum albinum,incurvum, forcipatimi, scoparium, gracile,cancellatum, Cand., Viva lactuca, squam-maria, pavonia, Cand., Corallina rubens,ojßcinarum, fragments of Zostera marina,Sertularia, Gorgonia, Tubularia, the Aceta-bularia mediterránea, Lmx., sand, andshells. But, usually, in this informal mix-ture the Gigartina Helminthocorton, Lmx.predominates, an alga {Fig. Journ. de Phys.t. XX. tab. 1) which we have seen to con-stitute from an eighth to a third of it.This plant is about two inches long, of apale brownish, or reddish colour, form-ing close tufts, composed of many slen-der stems, having three or four hornedand again straightened, almost simplebranches, with pointed extremities, sen-sibly articulated, having hemispherical,lateral, loose, and sessile fructiferous tu-bercles.
It is slightly stimulant, and is reputed toto be a powerful anthelmintic, particularlyfor children. — Dose, from ten grains to twodrams, in honey.
