TINCTURA OPII.

Tincture of Opium.

Take of hard purified Opium, powdered,ten drams by weight.Proof-Spirit of Wine one pint.

Digefl for ten days, and ftrain.

R E M A R K.

This is intenxkd to fupply the place of the Tinfit."Thebaka of the former Difpenfatory, which wasmade with wine ; twenty drops of which were fup-pofed to contain, at a medium, about one grain ofopium,but the folution was not equivaient in ef-fe£l to the quantity of opium employed. It hasbeen found by exp:riment, that, of two ounces offtrained opium, not quite one ounce was diffolvedin 3 pint of white wine,nearly the whole in proof-fpirit. Af. Rep. Proof-fpirif is therefore the propermenfbuum for ftrained opium ;and, althoughthepropörtion of opium has been leffened in the fäntt.Opii } its ftrength is not Jefs,rather greater,than
