Lewis recommends, as a precaution, to fprinkkthe fublimate whh a little re&ified fpliit duringthe triture; which, ' he fays, will not impede theunion of the ingredients, or prejudice the fublima-tjon; but that, if this be done, it i-s better not atfirft to cover the fubliming vefTel whh a cap ofpaper, as is ufual, but to defer it tili the mixturebegins to fublime,—that the fpirit may efcape.

The marks of the fublimate being perfe£t!y dul-cified are its being infipid, and not foluble by longboiling jn dtßiUsd water. If the water has takenup any part of it, en dropping water of Kali, ur■of Ammonia, inio the deco&iqn, it will grow tur-bid ; if not, itwill continue limpid.

Calomel is in common ufe as an aiterative inthe Lues Venerea, in dofes from one grain to five$fometimes joined with laxatives to prevent a ptya-iifm.
