Common Dandelion is an indigenous perennial plant, grow-ing in meadows, paflures, road fldes, ditch-banks, &c. andflowering from April to September, whh kaves notched,finely toothed, fmooth, (Linn.} varying from winged clefts,in a very dry fituation, to nearly entire in a very moift briej(Woodward;)ßem fomewhat cottony towards the top, (Curt.Stofas,) blojfom yeJlow, expanding aböut fiye or fix in themorning, and ciofing early in the afternoon. (IViiber.)The fmell of the herb is weak, the tafle bitter, —the root hasno fmell; the tafle at tirfl a little fweetifh, thea bitter, —-^fweeter at the beginning of /bring ; in fummer more bitter.(Bergius.) The roots, ieaves, and flower-fcalks, aboundwith a milky juice of no particulär fmell, but a bitterifh tafte^not loft by infpifiation. (L.M.M.) Neither the root northe plant in fubftance, nor its preparations, bear long keep-ing. The dry root, after being kept about a twelvemonthjentirely loft its bitternefsj and only a flight fweetifhnefs re-mained. An extracl: from the frefh root, infpiflated to dry-nefs, and kept the fame length of time, fuffered nearly thefame change. (Id. ib.)
