But although that other body, the Donati, werenot an integral part of the order, but strangers takeninto its service; still they are a very ancient corps,,and reaching to the founders time with various pri-vileges ; linked to the knights, but not their equalsin any way, nor members of their confraternity. 1 Wehave no precise deeds earlier than Gerards suc-cessor ; but these positively show that the Donatihad pre-existed. 2 There is their formula of recep-tion, as old as the thirteenth century, 3 in theVatican. They were accepted for a time gratis,to merit to be eventually fed and clad by the order,to wear a cross somewhat resembling that of theknights (with a quarter less, difference introducedposteriorly in 1160 at least), in hopes of beingconsidered superior to hired servants or stipendiarysoldiers. 4 In the documents are to be found twoDonati, one in London, in 1104, or thereabouts,and another in 1128, who gave himself (dono) andall he possessed to the order.
