Sir William Allan was prior after Gar-diner . 1 Confusion on this point is natural innorthern Europe, from knowing little, and caringnothing about the origin of either Hospitallers orTemplars; but turning away with a sneeringsmile, that says it would be a complete loss oftime for them to inform themselves of such anti-quarian frivolities . 2 The Wurzburgese on theother hand, are full of disdain that little is saidabout Germany, although many Germans were inthe first crusade . 3 Of the servants-at-arms, sincelay-brothers date no further back than the twelfthcentury, they may rather derive from servants-at-arms, than these from those; and of the aggregatedand Idospitalleresses, we have already shown they _made an integral part of the order from the first,as far as aggregation goes. Many of the first cru-saders had brought their wives with them, as aCount of Poitiers; but immediately after it, anumber of females came to Jerusalem, of thehighest rank, as a Countess of Holland, with whomthe Roman lady Agnes; as certain as several his-torical facts; not quite proved, yet on as firmground as many . 4
