The powder was put in the eprouvette loose, or withouta bag, only set up neatly in the bottom of the bore; and itis remarkable, not only how much more uniformly it nowacts, but also much more strongly, in the ratio of 36 to 30or 31. The same method of charging the eprouvette is in-tended to be always practised in future. The diameter ofthe 3lb balls 2-78, of the 4lbs were 3-09 inches. Charge ofpowder with the 3lb gun was 24oz ; with the 4lb it was 21-|.ounces.
